Feira da Ladra

Should, preferably, be done on Tuesday or Saturday.

Tuesday and Saturday are the days in which the "Feira da Ladra", a popular fair which began in the early twentieth century, and where you can find an all .

 

To get to the starting point, the best way is to take the mythical Tram 28E and get out near the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, the patron of the city. Here and we can visit the church we also knowing the room where St. Anthony lived .

 

From left part of the church, passing under an arch, we are where on the fair space, if is one of those days, enjoy it, if is not, well do not be sad, you can always visit the garden that is in the center of the square and then go to the Church of Santa Engracia, today the National Pantheon, which houses heroes and illustrious personages of Portugal, as Prince Henrique , Pedro Alvares Cabral, Vasco da Gama, Luís Vaz de Camões, Almeida Garrett, Amalia Rodrigues, among others.

 

After the visit we go to the heart of Alfama, a neighborhood known for Fado houses. 

This neighborhood was once a Jewish neighborhood, and have a very unique type where is worth getting lost.
On the end of Remédios street, you can find the Fado Museum, here you can learn more about the history of this traditional song of Lisbon as well as the voice and music of some singers.

 

Following way through the mazes of Alfama, you can find the "Casa dos Bicos" (house of nozzles), so called for is facade, in shape of diamond tip, an unique architectural specimen in the Lisbon context, an Italian Renaissance influence.

This building that once was a warehouse and headquarters cod trade , is now the foundation José Saramago , welcoming the library writer awarded Nobel Prize for Literature.

 

To finalize and continuing the theme of writing , we head to the Praça do Comercio. At the entrance on the right side, we have the Martinho da Arcada , the oldest café in the city, associated for longstanding to the history and literature, was frequented by leading politicians , writers and intellectuals like Bocage , Cesario Verde , Negreiros Almada and Fernando Pessoa.
